Live Edge Wood Boards

Live Edge Boards

Grimes Hardwoods maintains a large stock of live edge wood, also known as natural edge wood, which involves leaving bark and the natural curved edge on a piece, bringing out the natural shape of the tree. We sell all types of natural-edge slabs, even in table-size planks; exotic wood species; and highly figured grain patterns, such as burls. When sawing through entire trees, the live edge wood is kept separate from normal boards and goes through a different drying and preparation process.

We have slabs that are both kiln and air-died. Air-dried slabs maintain the best color; kiln-drying, although quicker, tends to even out subtle differences in wood tones.

The rich contours of natural wood edges give tables, benches, and other projects a sculptural quality, almost as much art as furniture. No two slabs will be exactly alike, making each project unique. Some of the species we carry are maple, elm, persimmon, sassafras, cherry, walnut, pine, cedar, cypress and many more. Since each one of these boards are unique, and demand for them is high, we recommend either calling or dropping by the mill to see what we have available at any given time.
